Finding the right fit

The Ultimate Adult Gi Outfit Guide

Fitting an adult Gi for IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) competition is essential to ensure comfort, mobility, and compliance with the rules. Let’s dive into the details:

  1. GI Material and Color:

    • The gi (kimono) must be made from woven fabric (usually cotton or cotton-like material).
    • Permissible gi colors are white, royal blue, or black.
    • Gis with tops and pants of different colors are not allowed.
    • Collars should match the rest of the gi in color.
  2. GI Size Requirements:

    • When your arm is extended straight parallel to the ground:
      • The gi top should reach your thigh.
      • Sleeves should be no more than 5 cm from your wrist.
      • Gi pants should reach no more than 5 cm above the ankle bone (tibial malleolus).
    • Verify official measurements:
      • GI lapel thickness: 1.3 cm
      • Width of GI collar: 5 cm
      • Sleeve opening at full extension: 7 cm.
  3. Belt Requirements:

    • Use a durable belt (4 to 5 cm wide) that corresponds to your rank color (e.g., white, blue, purple).
    • Black belts have a black tip; other ranks have a white or red tip.
  4. Additional Considerations:

    • No shirt under the gi top (except for women).
    • Women can wear a stretchy or elastic shirt beneath the gi.
    • Pants under gi pants are prohibited (except for women, who can wear shorter elastic pants).
    • Undergarments must be worn (no thong-type undergarments).

Remember, following these guidelines ensures fair competition and adherence to IBJJF rules. Happy training! 🥋👊
